The Assistant Director of JCC Camp Ruach will report to the Camp Director. The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills and have prior camp experience and experience with youth and/or teens. The Assistant Camp Director should demonstrate creativity, professionalism, and willingness to jump in and support all aspects of camp to ensure a successful and high-caliber day camp program.
JCC Camp Ruach is a 9-week day camp in Bridgewater, NJ currently serving over 600 campers ranging in age from 2 years old through entering grade 9 with nearly 180 staff ranging in age from teenagers to adults.
Full Time Position. Monday-Friday; This position includes evening & weekend hours as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Serve as second-in-command; support and represent the Camp Director in all aspects of camp operations
- Partner with the Camp Director on visioning, planning, implementation, management, and overall oversight of camp
- Maintain open and consistent communication with the Camp Director.
- Supervise Travel Unit Heads, including going on some trips and filling in as leadership as necessary on trips
- Oversee travel program logistics, camper behavior management, and parent communication
- Supervise LIT (Leadership in Training) camper unit & CIT (Counselor-in-Training) Coordinators
- Supervise Lunch/Snack Program
- Assist in supervising other Leadership Team, Onsite Unit Directors, Inclusion Team
- Provide direct support, feedback, and mentorship to all camp staff.
- Serve as a positive role model and foster a safe, inclusive, and fun camp environment
- Exercise sound judgment regarding policies, procedures, and child/staff wellbeing
- Sit on the Camp Committee and collaborate with community stakeholders to enhance programming
Administration & Operations
- Assist in overseeing daily camp operations and administrative functions
- Supervise Transportation Coordinator on all camp transportation, including bus companies, routes, parent communication, and bus staff training
- Collaborate with the Camp Program Director on camp programming, electives, themes, and special events
- Plan and coordinate all camp trips, outside vendors, entertainment
- Coordinate supply ordering with specialist staff
- Support budget management for transportation, trips, entertainment, equipment, and supplies
- Coordinate with JCC Maintenance and oversee camp facility opening/closing
- Staffing & Personnel Management
- Assist with staff hiring, including job postings, recruitment outreach, interviews, and onboarding
- Partner with Camp Director to design and implement staff orientation and training (pre-camp and in-season)
- Supervise and Implement year-round CIT training
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with year-round and seasonal staff
Communication & Marketing
- Assist with the management and coordination of internal and external camp communications
- Revise annual Camp brochure, Parent and Staff Manuals
- Partner with Marketing to develop targeted communications and recruitment strategies
- Work with webmaster for camp website updates and serve as direct user of camp livechat
- Work with the marketing team to oversee and execute camp social media strategy to support engagement and recruitment
- Maintain proactive, responsive, and solution-focused communication with families
- Handle sensitive or difficult customer situations with professionalism and confidentiality
- Family & Community Engagement
- Create and implement year-round camper events and Summer Family Fun Nights
- Support camper recruitment and family engagement efforts
- Plan and attend open houses, tours, orientations, visiting days, and special events
- Represent and promote Camp Ruach and the JCC at community events and programs (including evenings/weekends)
Organizational Responsibilities
- Support the mission of the entire JCC and Camp Ruach
- A portion of your off season work will be dedicated to other JCC duties that will be determined at time of hire including youth and teen engagement.
- Attend staff meetings and professional development
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Five years experience working with youth and teens
- Three years of direct supervisory experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or equivalent combination of experience and training)
- Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem solving skills
- Proficiency in computer systems including Microsoft Suite and willingness and ability to easily pick up other systems required.
- CPR and First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain.
- Positive demeanor and Customer Service Oriented
- Comfortable with Public Speaking
- Fun, willingness to be silly & dress up on theme days, and always have Ruach (camp spirit)
Physical Requirements
- Work at a desk/computer for extended periods
- Move throughout the facility during program hours
- Spend significant time outdoors during camp season
- Lift up to 15 pounds.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $55,000 - $65,000, commensurate with experience.
