Job Description

The Administrator or Executive Director is Congregation B’nai Tikvah’s (“CBT”) senior administrative professional and oversees day‑to‑day synagogue operations, including administration, finance, facilities, and communications. The role supports clergy and lay leadership, serves as the primary point of contact for congregants, and acts as liaison with vendors, tenants, and community partners.

QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate is dynamic, resourceful, highly organized, and able to thrive in a fast‑paced environment. Strong interpersonal, operational, and financial management skills are essential. Familiarity with Jewish lifecycle practices and synagogue operations is preferred. Experience in nonprofit or Jewish communal management is highly desirable. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Administration and Operations • Maintain proficiency with synagogue management systems and office software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Shalom Cloud) • Maintain comprehensive synagogue calendars for services, programs, meetings, rentals, and operations • Supervise clerical staff and coordinate payroll reporting for administrative personnel • Establish and maintain procedures for routine and emergency operations • Maintain secure, accurate records, including legal documents, contracts, bylaws, minutes, archives, and confidential member files • Ensure timely communication of synagogue notices and lifecycle milestones • Attend Executive Committee, Board, Budget, and other meetings as required • Coordinate with the webmaster to ensure consistent and effective digital communications Member Engagement and Community Relations • Support membership recruitment, engagement, and retention efforts • Respond promptly to member inquiries and concerns, coordinating with clergy and leadership as needed • Partner with the Vice President of Membership on membership materials and onboarding • Help integrate new members into synagogue life • Maintain relationships with Washington Cemetery personnel and oversee cemetery records Programs and Event Management • Coordinate logistics for services, holidays, lifecycle events, educational programs, meetings, and community events • Develop and maintain operational checklists to ensure consistent execution of ritual and lifecycle functions • Communicate schedule updates proactively to staff, volunteers, and members • Market synagogue facilities to increase rental revenue Facilities and Security Management • Oversee maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and operational readiness of the building and grounds • Supervise custodial staff and coordinate payroll reporting • Coordinate security planning with appropriate agencies, including North Brunswick Police Department, Private security contractor(s) and Homeland Security Financial Administration • Oversee administrative expenditures and promote sound financial stewardship • Assist with preparation of financial reports and statements • Perform bookkeeping, billing, and collections (dues, pledges, rentals, and fees) • Collaborate with the Treasurer and Financial Secretary to ensure accurate accounting and collections • Track gifts, endowments, memorial funds, and fundraising income • Prepare the annual administrative budget • Serve as the synagogue’s central purchasing agent The Administrator or Executive Director plays a central leadership role in ensuring CBT operates efficiently, responsibly, and in alignment with its mission while maintaining a welcoming, responsive, and professional synagogue environment. Annual compensation is in the range between $65,000 to $75,000 per year for a Synagogue Administrator, and between $75,000 to $85,000 per year for an Executive Director Benefits include: • 2 weeks paid vacation time annually • Paid days off on Jewish holidays (Yom Tov) and select Federal holidays when the office is closed • The option to direct a portion of compensation toward health care reimbursement • Cell phone and service provided by the Synagogue for business use

To be hired as an Executive Director, we would be seeking someone who has previously worked as a Synagogue Administrator or Executive Director, or in a very similar role. An Executive Director would take a more active role in partnering with clergy and lay leaders to chart the course for the future of the organization and think strategically about how to position the synagogue for growth and success and would be expected to operate with greater independence.
