Congregation Micah is a vibrant, inclusive, and innovative Reform Jewish community serving approximately 500 families in the Nashville area. We are seeking a Cantor or Cantorial Soloist to join our clergy and professional team.
At Micah, we believe Jewish life should be joyful, spiritually meaningful, intellectually engaging, with congregants deeply connected to one another. We honor Jewish tradition while continually seeking creative and innovative ways to bring Jewish wisdom, worship, music, and community to life.
We believe music is not an ornament to worship. It is one of the most powerful ways we pray, teach, comfort, celebrate, remember, and build community.
We are seeking a gifted musician and vocalist who is also a spiritual leader, teacher, collaborator, and relationship-builder. The ideal candidate will bring musical creativity and excellence, Jewish knowledge, warmth, emotional intelligence, organizational ability, and a genuine love of people of all ages.
We welcome candidates who are ordained Cantors as well as highly accomplished Cantorial Soloists whose training and experience equip them to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
THE ROLE
The Cantor/Cantorial Soloist will be a highly visible member of Micah's clergy and professional team, working closely with the Rabbis, Executive Director, Education Director, professional staff, lay leaders, musicians, and volunteers.
This person will help shape Micah's musical vision and spiritual life, both within and beyond the sanctuary. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable leading a room of hundreds in song, teaching a teenager one-on-one, collaborating with musicians, supporting a family during a significant life moment, and imagining new ways music can deepen Jewish life.
WORSHIP & SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP • Officiate and lead worship with the Rabbis and, when appropriate, independently in their absence, including Shabbat, festivals, High Holy Days, and other congregational services. • Bring musical excellence, spiritual depth, accessibility, and creativity to worship. • Introduce new music while honoring beloved congregational traditions. • Collaborate with the Rabbis in developing worship themes, transitions, storytelling, visual elements, and other creative components. • Lead prayer and chant with appropriate familiarity with Jewish liturgy and Hebrew.
MUSICAL LEADERSHIP & VISION • Lead Micah's musical vision, including musical experiences beyond traditional worship. • Direct, rehearse, and perform with congregational choirs, ensembles, bands, and other musical groups. • Recruit, inspire, and support volunteer and professional musicians. • Coordinate, rehearse, and perform with the accompanist, and occasional musical guests. • Prepare and introduce new music appropriate to Micah's spiritual and musical vision. • Create opportunities for congregational participation, ensuring that music is a means of connection and prayer—not simply performance. • Musical proficiency on one or more instruments is strongly preferred.
B'NAI MITZVAH & JEWISH LEARNING • Serve as the primary leader and administrator of Micah's B'nai Mitzvah program. • Tutor and coach B'nai Mitzvah students in prayer, Torah/Haftarah, worship leadership, and other areas of preparation in partnership with the Rabbis and educators. • Build strong relationships with students and families and maintain clear communication and preparation systems. • Help make B'nai Mitzvah preparation an experience of Jewish growth and learning, not simply preparation for a ceremony. • Plan and lead music and worship learning experiences within Religious School, high school, youth group, and family programming in collaboration with the Education Director. • Lead Tot Shabbat and other music-related activities at Micah Children's Academy (our preschool).
PASTORAL, LIFECYCLE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT • Provide pastoral care under the guidance and supervision of the Rabbis. • Participate in lifecycle events including B'nai Mitzvah, weddings, funerals, shivah minyanim, unveilings, and other significant moments. • Build meaningful relationships with congregants across generations and stages of life. • Participate in Jewish community collaborations, interfaith services, and events in the broader Nashville community. • Contribute to membership engagement, community-building, and the daily life of Congregation Micah.
COLLABORATION, TECHNOLOGY & ADMINISTRATION • Work collaboratively with the Rabbis and professional staff in planning and executing worship, programs, and congregational life. • Coordinate worship-related audio and visual elements, including sound setup, sound engineers, slides, and other technology, in partnership with the Rabbis and staff. • Provide leadership and coordination of worship technology without necessarily performing every technical function personally. • Maintain effective systems for worship planning, rehearsals, B'nai Mitzvah preparation, programming, and communication. • Manage multiple responsibilities with reliability, organization, timely follow-through, and attention to detail. • Participate actively in staff and clergy meetings and work within established budgets. • Maintain a regular and substantial on-site presence during the work week, recognizing the evening and weekend responsibilities of clergy life.
WHY MICAH?
We are seeking more than an accomplished musician.
We are seeking someone who can help people sing when they are joyful and find words when they are not—someone who can stand before hundreds of people and create a sense of intimacy, and who can sit with one grieving congregant and offer that same gift of presence.
At Micah, tradition and innovation are not opposites. We want to honor what has been handed down while asking what has yet to be imagined.
Most of all, we are looking for someone who wants to build something with us: a musical and spiritual life that is joyful, creative, deeply Jewish, and deeply human.
